He’s ridden roughshod over by the smarter, college-educated Phil (Cumberbatch), who, despite his classics degree, has opted for a weatherbeaten life on the range, castrating bulls with his bare hands, weaving ropes from cowhide, refusing to wash, and generally making a point of anything that proves him to be a rugged son of the plains. Quiet, ruminative George (Jesse Plemons) is a staid but tender type. The setting is Montana in 1925, where wealthy cattle-owning brothers Phil and George Burbank preside over an all-male community of cowhands – domestic staff excepted - on their remote ranch, overlooked by a range of hills. The latter theme is personified here by an intense, and tantalisingly nuanced performance by Benedict Cumberbatch, whose range expands ever more intriguingly, and here produces one of his most troubling characterisations to date.Ĭampion’s most thoroughly conceived, consistently involving drama for years Campion followers will be fascinated to see her adopting a big-country landscape canvas, as well as further pursuing some of her key interests, notably dysfunctional family dynamics, the vagaries of sexual desire and the malaises of the male ego – all themes that emerged fascinatingly in the two seasons of her recent TV drama Top Of The Lake. In fact, Campion has adapted The Power Of The Dog from a 1967 American novel by Thomas Savage, recently rediscovered and certainly due for a further surge of interest once this stark high-plains drama hits theatres in November, and Netflix the following month. Jane Campion goes full American Gothic with a 1920s-set story that feels like an old-school Western filtered through the dark dramatic mindset of a William Faulkner. ![]() ![]() Moviegoing was my thing, a way of seeing and of being. But going to the movies was one of my first adventures in sovereignty, one of the first ways that I experienced navigating ordinary life without parental supervision. I grew up in New York in the 1970s watching as many films as I could, including on TV. (They’re still closed.) The tears of critics are tiny, but moviegoing is who I am. When movie theaters closed in Los Angeles in March, I cried. I know which theater and studio in Los Angeles (where I live) has the biggest screen, the best sound, sightlines and seats - me, I like to sit in the middle of the theater, perfectly centered. A big-screen fundamentalist, I love going out to the movies, to first- and second-run cinemas as well as to art houses, museums and cinémathèques. But in thinking about my favorites of the year and all the many new and old titles I’ve seen, I also thought a lot about how I watched movies and, well, just watched. The point of a top 10 list is to share our preferred movies. I didn’t, I just needed to stop watching, but I couldn’t put down my phone, which tethered me to the larger world that I greatly missed. It’s no wonder that my eyes had begun to regularly ache and sometimes sting, prompting me to worry that I needed a new prescription for my glasses. I read the news, doomscrolled Twitter, did puzzles, checked my email and kept scrolling. On one lost day not long ago, I spent a horrifying (embarrassing!) 11 hours and 15 minutes on my phone. ![]() It was a year of watching obsessively yet indiscriminately, a year of small and smaller screens. While you could (and let’s be honest, most likely will) spend your days binge-watching the latest documentaries on Netflix or SBS, a better use of your time could be to hone your domestic skills, such as in the kitchen. There’s a good chance you’re able to continue working from a home desk, but the grim reality is a lot of us are out of work for the time being. ![]() ![]() The miter gauge adjusts to any angle you wish to cut, and slides along the table top in either of two parallel grooves that run the length of the working surface on either side of the blade. The miter fence, as it is also called, is a pushing device for making crosscuts. However, a portable sawhorse or similar device of the same height as the table can be bought or made, and it can be positioned to support either boards or lumber.Įssential accessories for any table saw are a miter gauge and a ripping fence, both of which help guide the work piece safely past the blade. This is perhaps the greatest single disadvantage of a portable table saw: A larger tabletop makes the tool safer and easier to use, offering more support and stability for the work piece while sawing. The cutting surface on portable table saws is smaller than on shop models (roughly one and a half by two feet square, rather than approximately two feet by three and a half feet). The blade can also be tilted to make bevel cuts. The blade can be raised and lowered for cutting stock of various thicknesses (a table saw with a ten-inch blade can cut stock slightly more than three inches thick when the blade is fully extended). ![]() ![]() Like the larger iron table saws designed for shop use, portable table saws adjust for different cuts. They can also be used on top of sawhorses, workbenches, or other level surfaces at the work site. Portable table saws do not come with built-in stands, but leg sets can be purchased separately or fabricated without much difficulty. They consist of a box that contains the motor, controls, and blade mechanics, along with a table top through which the blade protrudes. Portable table saws, which are occasionally referred to as bench table saws, are often made largely of aluminum for ease of transport. It can also function as a shaper and a sander, when equipped with appropriate blades. It rips and crosscuts it miters and cuts compound angles, rabbets, and tenons. For on-site work, a portable table saw is more practical than larger, heavier table saws. ![]() ![]() 2563 AutoForm Technical Product Manager Markus Avermann describes how the Forming Limit A real sheet will at some point crack during forming. 032 Thread Rating: 0 Vote(s) - 0 Average 1 2 3 4 5 Thread Modes BarTender 2016 R8 11. 0 Sheet Metalix CNCKAD V18 Test with Dongle / Clone or 30 มิ. You can reuse this USB drive for normal stuff after you finish installing Mavericks. Since Unibeast will erase all of the files on your USB drive, make sure to back up its contents first. An empty USB drive (8 GB or larger): The USB drive used for Unibeast must be at least 8 GB in size. (you might be able to circumvent this requirement by spoofing your system version) (a guide about spoofing the system version will be posted soon). Though the Mac App Store is included in Mac OS X 10.6.6 and newer, you have to be running 10.6.8 to download Mavericks. OS X Mavericks (Free): The method used by this guide requires that you download a free copy of the Mavericks installer app from the Mac App Store. ![]() Be sure to install the Virtualbox Extension Pack to view USB drives from your virtual machine. A Hackintosh with Snow Leopard/Lion/Mountain Lion already installed, a real Mac, or a Mac OS X virtual machine: Unibeast is a Mac app, so you need a computer with Mac OS X to run it. Unibeast works with Mac OS X Snow Leopard and newer registration on is required to download Unibeast. You can then use this Unibeast USB drive to run the Mavericks installer on a PC. Unibeast (Free): Unibeast is a Mac program that modifies the official OS X Mavericks installer, and writes it onto a USB drive. You can bypass this requirement by applying the MBR patch to Unibeast (which I will post soon) (the process for Mavericks is the exact same as for Mountain Lion). Unibeast will not work on a hard drive where Windows was installed first. A separate hard drive: Mac OS X needs its own hard drive (a minimum of 10 GB of space is required, but at least 50 GB of space is recommended). If your computer already has OS X Mountain Lion installed, Unibeast will just update Mountain Lion to Mavericks normally, without deleting any of your apps or files. The hardware requirements for OS X Mavericks are identical to those for OS X Mountain Lion AMD processors and older 32-bit Intel processors (such as Pentium M) are not supported. Be sure to read the Hackintosh compatibility guide (which I will post soon) very carefully, to check whether or not your computer qualifies. ![]() ![]() However, in the summer of the same year, EMI Music Publishing's (EMI) Jon "Big Jon" Platt heard the track at a barbecue and fell in love with it, believing that "it would be perfect for Jay-Z". When they received a negative response on the track, they were convinced it would never be recorded. Hunte recalled, "We said to ourselves, 'we complain so much about New York - about the busy streets, about the crowds and the pushing, about the subway system - but I would trade that for anything right now.' Before we left the hotel that night, we knew we would write a song about our city." Although they wrote the song as a way to voice their feelings for their hometown, they sent it to the Roc Nation music label the following month in hope that Jay-Z would like it and record it. ![]() Hunte was ill during that summer, while Sewell-Ulepic's mother was ill. The track's creation was inspired during an overseas trip Hunte and Sewell-Ulepic made to London in February 2009 when they were both feeling homesick. Hunte grew up in the same building where rapper and hip hop artist Jay-Z lived-560 State Street, an address which is mentioned in the song. "Empire State of Mind" was originally written by Brooklyn-native singer, songwriter and producer Angela Hunte and writing partner Jane't "Jnay" Sewell-Ulepic. Keys said that she chose to record her own version of "Empire State of Mind" because she wanted to express her own personal feelings about New York. Her version was positively received by critics, reached the Top 10 in the UK, the Netherlands and Ireland charts, and peaked at number fifty-five on the Billboard Hot 100 without an official release. Keys recorded a sequel entitled " Empire State of Mind (Part II) Broken Down", which is featured on her fourth studio album The Element of Freedom (2009). Usually when the duo performs the song, an overhead screen shows images of places in New York. It has been performed by Jay-Z and Keys multiple times, including during the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards and the American Music Awards of 2009. "Empire State of Mind" was released as the third single from The Blueprint 3 in October 2009. In the song's music video, which is primarily in black-and-white, Jay-Z and Keys are shown performing the song in various locations in New York. As of June 2014, the single has sold over 5.5 million copies in the United States. It appeared in 2009 year-end charts in Italy, Australia and the US, where it was also the last number one hit of the 2000s. In the US, the song topped the Billboard Hot 100 for five consecutive weeks, becoming Jay-Z's first number-one single on the chart as a lead artist. It peaked within the top 10 in many countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, Italy and Sweden. The song achieved commercial success worldwide. It was also nominated for three Grammy Awards, winning Best Rap Song and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. Profanity is present throughout the song and, although it is usually included during live performances, it was omitted during the performance at Game 2 of the 2009 World Series.Ī critical and commercial success, "Empire State of Mind" was included in multiple critics' top 10 list of the best songs of 2009, including Rolling Stone magazine and The New York Times. It contains references to various locations in New York and its famous residents, while describing the city's essence. The song was described by critics as an "orchestral rap ballad" with "crashing piano chords" and a "soaring" hook. ![]() "Empire State of Mind" contains songwriting contributions from Keys and Shux. Blige was also considered for the part, but Keys was chosen after Jay-Z heard the song's piano loop. The song originally featured Hunte on the hook, but when Hunte and Sewell-Ulepic were asked if they thought anyone else would be more appropriate for the chorus, Hunte suggested Keys. They later took the suggestion of an associate of EMI Music Publishing and resubmitted it to Jay-Z, who kept the "New York" singing part on the hook, changed the verses, and recorded it. The following month, they submitted it to Jay-Z's label Roc Nation, whose reviews were a discouragement. It was originally written by Angela Hunte and Janet Sewell-Ulepic as a tribute to their hometown, New York City. Produced by Al Shux, the song features a music sample of " Love on a Two-Way Street" performed by The Moments. ![]() " Empire State of Mind" is a song performed by American rapper Jay-Z featuring vocals by American singer Alicia Keys, from Jay-Z's 11th studio album, The Blueprint 3 (2009). ![]() |
